World Health Day 2016: Beat diabetes

12:00am & Health

Each year, the World Health Organisation selects a theme for World Health Day, which falls on the 7 April this year. The theme for 2016’s Health Day is diabetes.

In 2012, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths. About 350 million people have diabetes worldwide, a number that is likely to double over the next two decades.

There are two major forms of diabetes; type 1 diabetes is characterized by a lack of insulin production and type 2 diabetes results from the body's ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes is much more common than type 1 diabetes and accounts for approximately 90% of all diabetes worldwide.

A few simple lifestyle changes have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. One of the lifestyle changes that has numerous health benefits, is an increase in physical activity.

With an Acorn Stairlift you will have full access to be active and mobile around the home you love. Being more mobile around the home can help to keep your blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides (fats) on target. In addition to those, it also relieves stress, strengthens your heart, muscles and bones, keeping your body, and joints flexible. All of these factors help contribute to the prevention of diabetes.

Just 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days combined with a balanced diet can drastically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
