What are the Arthritis Association and charities in the UK?

12:00am | & News

10 million people in the UK suffer from arthritis.

The number of arthritis sufferers in the UK is shocking and it's taken a while for the medical establishment to catch up in terms of funding for the condition. However there are a number of medical charities that have been set up in the UK that not only offer support to arthritis sufferers, carers and their families but also help to fund research.

Every single charity offers something to arthritic patients including news, advice, helplines, support groups and events. There may be local groups in your area but listed below are just a few of the nationwide charities.

Arthritis Research UK

One of the largest arthritis charities in the UK is Arthritis Research UK which started in 1936 as the Empire Rheumatism Council. It funds research into the crippling disease, educates health care professionals and provides vital information to patients and their families. Fundraising events are held all over the country including some overseas.

National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society

The society is exclusively for people with rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis and provides information and support both for patients and health professionals. It's the only UK patient led charity and actively campaigns for the best treatment and care for RA. You can also find NRAS groups in your local area.

The Children's Chronic Arthritis Association

As you can guess from the title, this association focuses on children who suffer from arthritis and their families. Practical help and support is offered, including UK events where children can meet up and participate in a wide range of activities specially designed for them. They also list details of small grants which help to provide funding for children who may be struggling with arthritis.

Arthritis Care

Arthritis Care claims to be the largest charity working with people who suffer from arthritis and is a user-led charity which means that the people who use their services also have a say in how the charity is run. Their exclusive magazine, Inspire, is available four times a year and this, along with other publications and resources, aim to educate and inform.

As well as charities dedicated to the treatment and support of people with arthritis there are many more medical websites such as the NHS which also provide information about arthritis causes, treatment and news.
