How an Acorn Stairlift can help ease the pain of arthritis

Arthritis Care Awareness Week runs from Saturday May 14th to Saturday the 21st in the UK.

Arthritis is a condition marked by painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. There are many types of arthritis which can affect people in different ways, with around 10 million people in the UK alone living with arthritis on a daily basis.

Although usually associated with older people, arthritis can affect people of all ages. In the UK there are around 15,000 children and young people diagnosed with types of arthritis, which overall is the nation's number one cause of pain and physical disability.

Arthritis can be mild and temporary, but it can also be progressive and severe, leading to reduced mobility and loss of independence. Osteoarthritis – often described as 'wear and tear' arthritis – is the most common form, affecting weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees.

As more people live longer, osteoarthritis is a growing problem, although medication and joint replacement surgery can go a long way towards easing the worst effects of the condition. Simple home modifications such as handrails, walking frames and high seat chairs can also help people to remain living independently in their own homes.

But perhaps the biggest boon to arthritis sufferers is a stairlift, removing one of the most daunting hurdles to people with joint problems – the stairs.

Dr Hilary Jones, Medical Advisor to Acorn Stairlifts, said: "A stairlift is an essential accessory that so many of my patients have benefited from in this situation.

"Suiting the exact needs of the individual, it overcomes the barrier of whatever kind of stairs are in situ, and is easy to operate."

All Acorn Stairlifts, whether for curved or straight staircases, feature simple-to-use controls on each arm. This is just one feature which has led to Acorn being the first stairlift manufacturer awarded the Arthritis Foundation's Ease-of-Use commendation. This important award was only made after thorough testing of all Acorn Stairlifts by both industry experts and arthritis sufferers.

Many of Acorn's customers have had their stairlift fitted due to joint replacement surgery resulting from arthritis. It not only proves an invaluable necessity during the recovery period following surgery, but will reduce stress on the new joint going forward.

Acorn's unique modular system also means that most stairlifts can be fitted within three days of an order being placed, or even next day if necessary.

"As a doctor I know that modern medicine can always help with arthritis," added Dr Hilary. "But for everyday practical help there are many other important considerations and at the top of the list must surely be a stairlift."
