Today we are taking the opportunity to wish a Happy 90th Birthday to veteran BBC broadcaster Desmond Carrington.
Proving that age is no barrier, Desmond continues to present his popular Radio 2 show "The Music Goes Round" every Friday evening at 7pm, dipping into classic tracks from all musical genres from the 1920s to the present day.
He has presented the evergreen show continuously since 1981, notching up 35 years, originally broadcast on Sundays before moving to Tuesdays then Fridays. He now produces and presents the show from his home in Perth, Scotland, which he shares with a vast record collection.
Originally an actor, Desmond was conscripted into the army during the Second World War and joined the British Forces Broadcasting Service working at its radio station in Ceylon. On returning to the UK a few years later he worked as a radio producer while continuing to act, becoming a familiar face as Dr Anderson in TV series 'Emergency Ward 10'.
But radio would become his true home, his encyclopaedic knowledge of music and gentlemanly style proving an enduring hit with listeners. Since moving to broadcasting from his home in 2011, his show has developed a uniquely intimate feel. Many fans feel they have been invited to join him at home for a pleasurable hour of nostalgia.
So today we at Acorn join all his fans in wishing Desmond Carrington many happy returns and long may his music continue to go round!
